Deck Refinishing: Machine Sanding & Penetrating Oil

Deck refinishing in Greater Vancouver runs $3–$10 per square foot depending on deck condition, size and railings, including Festool machine sanding and premium penetrating oil. We don't put film-forming stains or paint on decks: films peel in BC's wet climate. Penetrating oil protects the wood from within, and can never flake off.

In short

Deck refinishing runs $3–$10 per square foot depending on condition. We sand with Festool dust extraction and finish with deep-penetrating premium oils (CUTEK Extreme) that soak in rather than form a film, so the deck never peels.

Why oil, not stain or paint

Stains and paints form a film on top of the wood. BC rain and UV get underneath that film, and within two or three seasons it cracks and peels, and the whole deck needs stripping. We work with penetrating oils like CUTEK Extreme instead: the oil diffuses deep into the wood core, stays mobile inside the timber and migrates to cuts and cracks as they appear, controls moisture to minimize warping, cupping and splitting, and simply fades gracefully over time instead of peeling. Clear oil showcases the natural grain; 18 Colourtones add UV protection and let you control the tone.

Our process

Inspection and board-level repairs; Festool machine sanding with HEPA dust extraction down to clean, splinter-free wood; penetrating oil applied to saturation, clear or tinted; and a written maintenance guide. Re-oiling later is fast: no stripping, no sanding, just one refresher coat when water stops beading, and each maintenance coat uses less oil than the last.

When your deck is ready for this

Boards turning gray or silver, water soaking in instead of beading, splinters underfoot, or an old stain already peeling: all four are exactly what this service fixes.

A typical deck: 1–2 days of work plus drying time. Weather-dependent. We schedule around dry windows.

Yes. We machine-sand the failed film off completely, then oil. That peeling cycle ends permanently: penetrating oil cannot peel.

When water stops beading on the surface, typically every 1–2 years for high-traffic decks, and less often over time because the protection is cumulative.
